This Friday I will be heading to the  Great Smoky Mountains for a couple of shooting days before the fall color workshop begins. It will be great visiting some of my favorite locations and checking out a few new shooting spots.

I captured this image on a wet overcast day which helped to give me great saturated color. I enjoy a shooting on a beautiful sunny day and can capture great images but when it is raining I think ‘Let it Rain’ and Eric Clapton’s melodies start playing in my head. These are usually my best shooting days!

Smoky Mountain Tapestry of Colors

A tapestry of colors comes to mind when I capture fall images in the Smoky Mountains.  My two favorite times in the Smoky Mountains are the spring and fall. In the fall a night’s frost changes the sugars in the plants which create the wonderful color patterns along the rivers and meadows. The colors are truly amazing

Eastern Sierra Nevada

My friend Steve from Salt Lake City spends a lot of time photographing in the southwest where he has captured some amazing images. The composition and light in the image below that he shot in the Eastern Sierra Nevada if truly exceptional.

San Gimignano – After Hours

Early in the morning and later in the evening the ancient cities have very little foot traffic and are wonderful time to capture images. After our sunset shot of San Gimignano we went into town for a nice dinner and on our walk back to our hotel the piazza was empty which gave everyone the opportunity to capture great images of this piazza which is usually crowed.

When I am teaching on location my main focus is making sure that everyone in capturing great images and learning their camera. Going to great locations makes my job easy and having so many wonderful people travel with me has enriched the time that I spend traveling.

Bighorn Sheep

Bighorn sheep are on the shy side and it is hard to get them to pose. Last fall I was lucky and capture a few images as I watched these beautiful animals traversing the rocky terrain with a balance that amazed me. Watching them scampering along the rocks was just fun and still brings a smile when I see the images.

Happy Valentines Day

For Valentine’s day I thought I would share a couple of the heart images that I have taken while on location shoots.

When Two Hearts Meet – Southwest Workshop

When I hiked out to capture this Butte for sunset I found these two hearts made from volcanic rock that a couple of romantic hikers made for each others in this out of the way place. I am always touched when I find art in out of the way places that only a lucky few will ever see. I hope all my friends and family get to spend quality time with loved ones.

Time exposures along the rivers in the Smoky Mountains

Spending a day photographing the rivers in the Smoky Mountains is a great way to study movement while capturing great images. Every few feet you will find different patterns in the swirls and flow of the river. By working with different shutter speeds you will find what work best for you.

Venice is a city in Elegant Decay

The architectural influences brought home to this island city in northern Italy by the merchants of Venice made it a city that every photographer should experience. From the 13th through the 17th century it was the wealthiest city in Europe and today when walking the labyrinth that is Venice, you can enjoy the art and design put into buildings and palazzos along its narrow walkways. Although still beautiful, Venice no longer has the great wealth necessary to maintain its thousands of palazzos and is a city in Elegant Decay waiting to be captured by photographers.

Grand Canyon South Rim Panorama

Nature has a beauty that refreshes our souls and keeps calling us back. Our National Parks are exceptional locations that have been set aside for us and future generations to spend time in. This year I will be spending teaching in both the Smoky Mountains and Zion national parks.
